At the invitation of the State Key Laboratory of Geodesy and Earth’s Dynamics, Dr. SHEN Weisen from the University of Colorado visited WHIGG on February 24, 2012.

Dr. Shen delivered a scientific speech titled: ”Joint inversion of surface wave dispersion and receiver functions: Monte Carlo approach”. The seminar was presided by the vice President XIONG Xiong as well as postgraduates attended the seminar.

Dr. Shen gave a detailed introduction about jointing inversion of surface wave dispersion and receiver functions for crust and up mantle using the Monte Carlo approach. First, Dr. Shen reviewed some shortcomings in the surface wave dispersion and receiver functions. And then, he gave his novel method for data collection and model construction. At last, the method was applied to inverse the crust and up mantle in the western of USA.
