At the invitation of the State Key Laboratory of Geodesy and Earth’s Dynamics, Dr. SUN Dao-yuan from University of Southern California visited WHIGG on June 1st, 2012.
Dr. SUN delivered a scientific speech titled:” Rolling hills of primordial material on the Core Mantle Boundary”. SUN gave a detailed introduction about the Ultra Low Velocity Zone (ULVZ) at the base of the mantle using the USArray. They found a relatively flat low velocity structure sitting on the normal (PREM-like) CMB beneath west US and Canada coastline. During his visit, he discussed deeply with researchers from WHIGG on the ULVZ.
Dr. SUN got his bachelor’s degree from The University of Science and Technology of China, and then PhD from the Caltech. His main research interests are in the Earth’s deep mantle structure and the Core-Mantle-Boundary.
