From April 21th to 26th, expedition from the Key Laboratory for Environment and Disaster Monitoring and Evaluation of IGG developed a week-long field sampling investigation in the Dongting Lake and Poyang Lake.
The expedition members collected samples including Phragmites australis, Phalaris arundinacea, Carex tristachya, Salix matsudana, Populus euramericana in Chun-shan of East Dongting Lake, Caisanghu Town (the East Dongting Ecological Observatory of CAS), Piaowei Islet, Luhu Lake, West Dongting Lake Delta and Wanzi Lake. They also collected poplars, Phalaris arundinacea and Phragmites australis in the Poyang Lake area, incluing Fujiatang Village in Yugan County, Ji’niu Mountain in Wucheng Town, Yongxiu County and Sanjiao sub-farm of Luwei farm. The vegetation type, latitude, longitude and biomass parameters of every plot were recorded.
The main purpose of the investigations is to obtain the wetland vegetation community types, distribution rule, vegetation diversity and biomass of the Dongting Lake and Poyang Lake. It also provides the first-hand measured data for carrying out remote sensing monitoring for the wetland and analyzing the succession process, temporal and spatial distribution characteristics, the status quo of ecological function and landscape pattern of wetland types and vegetation community, in order to grasp the trend of the lake relationship after the completion of the Three Gorges Project, especially the contribution rate to the wetland ecosystem due to the seasonal flood storage. The final results include the dynamic monitoring of water surface, wetlands cover type, wetland vegetation diversity and biomass estimate of the Dongting Lake and Poyang Lake.etc.
