Prof. Claus from the German National Center for Scientific Research of the Earth was invited to give a report in WHIGG on September 7. His speech title is "Seismic Early Warning-Discussing about the Possibilities". Director Sun Heping took part in the speech. Deputy director Xiong Xiong presided over the meeting.
Prof. Claus introduced the importance of the earthquake early warning systems as well as some key technical issues about cutting-edge scientific research on earthquake early warning system: how to quickly determine the location of the earthquake, how to quickly determine the magnitude of the earthquake and how to rapidly estimate the damage of earthquake.
Prof. Claus thought that the accuracy of theoretical calculation methods and interpolation methods was limited. Shock maps calculated from empirical means and interpolated methods had only limited reference value. These problems can be solved by direct observation methods rather than theoretical analysis; and the reliability of the results can be improved. As the traditional seismograph was expensive, large-scale use of traditional methods in the past was not practical. For this reason, a relatively inexpensive seismograph recording system was used in German National Center for Scientific Research of the Earth. Through this system, we can get accurate disaster assessment criterions quickly.
Finally, Prof. Claus introduced the system in details and put forward that this system can reduce earthquake losses, he was also eager to get future cooperation with WHIGG.
